How To Solve The Curtain Problem When You Have Bay Windows

Bay windows are a bit odd and this means they sometimes pose problems. A bay window is actually just a regular window but the unusual feature is the way it communicates with the rest of the house and its walls. It represents a window space projecting outward from the main walls of a building, forming a bay in the room. One of the most tricky things to do is finding a right curtain design for these bay windows.

Ideally, the curtain rod would bend to follow the design of the window but, as it turns out, this is quite difficult. A much better solution would be to have three separate curtain rods.

It’s possible to be able to use a single large curtain for all three windows as long as you don’t plan on opening and closing it and simply using it as a window treatment.

If the windows are large and go almost all the way up to the ceiling, then you’ll want to use long curtains so you’d need one for each window. They will be operated individually and you’ll have the possibility of covering up the windows entirely

But if you wish to only have two curtains, then you’ll have to be creative and make some sort of compromise. Perhaps the bay windows can form a shallow balcony-like structure and the curtains can conceal it.

Bay windows are a really nice idea for the bedroom. They offer the perfect opportunity to include a reading nook or a small seating area and they also maximize the views.

If you opt for a single rod that goes around the corners then two curtains can’t be enough. You’ll most likely need three or four, depending on how you hang the rod and attach it to the walls.

If the bay windows form a smooth and delicate curve as opposed to an angular structure, then it’s possible to find flexible curtain rods. This seems like a great way to expand a room, even if just a little bit.

The extra space can become a comfortable breakfast nook with large, floor-to-ceiling windows. The rods can be hidden behind a fake ceiling and the curtains would look extra stylish.

If symmetry is what you’re looking for in your design, then four curtains would be a perfect option for your bay windows. Two would cover the sides and the other two would meet at the center.

Perhaps you can also find a way to reduce the number of curtains to only two, in which case the design would still be symmetrical and also a bit more simplified. It’s a strategy that could work both in the case of traditional and modern interiors.

There’s also the possibility to conceal the rods and the upper portion of the curtains and this way to get a fluid and uniform look without exposing all the secondary details and technical elements.

The valance can definitely make things run smoothly and elegant but keep in mind that it’s a feature that best suits traditional décors. A modern or contemporary home with bay windows would need a more simplified look.

If long and heavy curtains are not your style, then try other types of window treatments. What if each window has its own separate shade? Then you wouldn’t have to worry about how the curtains are attached or how many you need.

Roman shades allow you to create a clean, simple and versatile look. They also let you control the amount the light and privacy each of the windows offers.

12 Tips That Will Solve All Your Window Treatment Problems

Don't slack off when it comes to getting your drapes just right—they're one of the most important parts of every room in your home. Elaine Griffin offers her favorite curtain rules to live by.

1. Always hang curtains as close to the ceiling as possible. As a rule, you'll need to leave an inch for access, but that's it.

2. You can have both blinds and curtains. It's all a question of how tailored you want your space to be. If you're going for a more formal look, opt for shades and curtains.

3. Don't ever worry about your windows being too large. It's like being too pretty -- it's just not possible. If you don't want curtains to overwhelm a space; choose a fabric that matches the wall color and doesn't create contrast.

4. Make sure your curtains complement the rest of your furniture. In a room you have four major elements: floor, ceilings, walls, and furniture, but only one can be the star. The other elements are featured in a supporting role, so if you want a leopard print curtains, you don't want a leopard print couch and vise versa.

5. When choosing between wood slat blinds and roman shades, it all depends on how much light and privacy you want. Slatted blinds allow you to adjust the amount of light a room gets, while roman shades don't let any light in.

6. With bay windows, you have two curtain options. One, you can hang them on the either side before it starts to bay, and then do a roman shade on the inside of every window. Or, you could do curtains on each window, one on the left, one where the windows join, one where the other windows join, and one on the outside.

7. Curtain length is a matter of personal preference. I like my curtains to just kiss the floor, creating a cleaner look, but some people favor a puddle. The modern puddle is three to four inches.

8. For bedrooms, blackout blinds are best. They're made with heavier material that completely blocks light.

9. If you need to regulate blinding light, try solar shades. They're roller shades that are made of perforated vinyl, so they allow only a certain amount of light through.

10. A one-inch wide curtain rod is perfect. As for the finial, a simple look is classic.

11. When hanging curtains, make sure you get proper fullness. You'll want your curtains to be twice or even two and a half times the size of the window.

12. If you're buying ready-made curtain panels, buy the longest ones you can. Have your dry cleaner hem them for a more custom look.

We should match the design along with the room theme. They should be contradictory to the décor and they should always reflect the materials and objects present in the room as well as the color palette and materials used in the décor. Also heavy drapes are needed in airy rooms where more sunlight enters. We can add depth to the room space or choose the curtain color based so as to give a new look and feel to our room.
